Things to do

Dr.Davy passed through these uninhabited plains in 1819 and the present “Little England” owes much to the untiring efforts of Governor Edward Barnes and Sir Samuel Baker (later the Governor of Sudan), where one account describes his friends and him shooting down 104 elephants in three days!

Today the city boasts of a fine lake, a golf course renowned as one of the best in the Asia-Pacific region, a Botanical garden and a park, incidentally named after the good queen “Bess” Queen Victoria, the Horton plains and bakers falls and last but not least the ambiance of a multitude of tea estates and trails crossing them with endless persistence, with dusky maidens plucking the precious tea buds, reminiscent of a era gone by.

  • Hakkgala botanical gardens is within 5 minutes from the hotel, with breath taking views across the southern parts of Sri Lanka and on a clear day one is offered a magnificent view across the crispy clean mountain air.
  • Horton plains (45 minutes), named after Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton (Governor 1831-1837) and Maha Eliya Thenna in Sinhala, a protected area in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, covered with montane grassland and cloud forest. Horton plains are the cradle of three of the four major rivers of Sri Lanka. Trek around the park is about 06 km with the highlight being the baker’s falls.
  • Ambewela farm, one of the major farms of Sri Lanka (45 minutes), is also a key attraction in this area along with trekking to lovers leap waterfall, to Piduruthalagala range the highest point in Sri Lanka, or take a walk through the single tree hill and Glenn falls.
  • Tea Factory, One can also visit a tea factory and estate to observe how the “cup that cheers” comes to your table, how the dusky maiden pluck tea leaves in their nimble time honored way, their traditional dancing at dusk making offers to their deity’s are some of the thing on offer.
  • Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, for those intrepid golfers Nuwara Eliya has a course to boast as one of the best in the Asia-Pacific region, the Nuwara Eliya golf club formed in 1889 by the British planters in their holiday town with little brooks and stream creating enough hazards on the 18 hole golf course. The club expects a certain dress code for men and women and best be attired appropriately. The Club Houses a bar, billiards room, the restaurant serves characteristic bland English cuisine.
  •  Gregorie lake boat tours and cycling on lake side.
